The size of the perfluorocarbon molecules are 100 times smaller than an erythrocyte (red blood cell), which allows them to access some ischemic areas that are not accessible to red blood cell-oxygenated blood. Here, the oxygen molecules dissolve into the molecular cavities within liquid droplets. This then drives the natural proliferation of elastin and collagen.
